Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does SalahMode block my apps?
A: SalahMode uses Apple's Screen Time APIs (FamilyControls and ManagedSettings) to place shields on your selected apps during prayer times. When a prayer time arrives, the apps you chose are blocked until you verify your prayer, wait out the timer, or use an emergency unlock.
Q: How do I unlock my apps?
A: There are three ways to unlock:
1. Pray to Unlock: Complete one rakah in front of your camera (prayer movement), scan your prayer mat, or verify your location at a nearby mosque — depending on your chosen proof method.
2. Wait it out: Apps automatically unlock when the configured block duration expires (30 min – 3 hours).
3. Emergency Unlock: Use one of your 3 weekly emergency unlocks for genuine emergencies.
Q: What are the different prayer verification methods?
A: SalahMode offers three ways to verify your prayer:
• Prayer Movement: Place your phone to the side and perform one rakah. The app detects your postures (bowing, prostrating, sitting) using pose detection.
• Prayer Mat: Point your camera at your prayer mat. The app uses image classification to recognize it.
• Mosque Location: The app checks if you're within 100 meters of a mosque using GPS.
You can set a different method for each prayer in the Schedules tab.
Q: How does the camera prayer verification work?
A: Place your phone to the side so it can see your full body from a side profile. The app uses on-device pose detection to track your prayer postures: ruku (bowing), standing, sujud (prostration), sitting, and second sujud. You need to complete one full rakah to unlock. A progress circle shows your advancement through the postures. No video or images are recorded or stored.
Q: How are prayer times calculated?
A: Prayer times are calculated locally on your device using astronomical algorithms based on your location (latitude/longitude) and your chosen calculation method. After initial setup, no internet connection is needed for prayer time calculations. We support methods including ISNA, Muslim World League, Egyptian General Authority, Umm al-Qura, and more.
Q: What are emergency unlocks?
A: Emergency unlocks let you bypass an active lock for genuine emergencies. You get 3 per week, and they reset every Sunday. Use them wisely — they're meant for situations where you truly need immediate access to a blocked app.
Q: Can I choose which prayers to track?
A: Yes! You can enable or disable schedules for each of the 5 daily prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) individually. You can also create custom schedules for additional focus times that aren't tied to prayer times.
Q: What is Focus Mode?
A: Focus Mode lets you instantly block your selected apps for a custom duration (5 min – 3 hours) without waiting for a prayer time. It's perfect for Quran reading, dhikr, or simply taking a break from distractions. Just set your duration, choose an intention, and tap start.
Q: Is my camera data private?
A: Absolutely. All camera processing for prayer movement detection and prayer mat scanning happens entirely on your device using MediaPipe. No images, video, or pose data are ever sent to any server, stored on your device, or shared with anyone.
Q: What permissions does SalahMode need?
A: SalahMode may request:
• Screen Time: Required to block and unblock apps (via FamilyControls).
• Camera: For prayer movement and prayer mat verification.
• Location: For accurate prayer time calculation and mosque proximity verification.
• Notifications: For prayer time reminders.
You can manage all permissions in iOS Settings at any time.
Q: How do streaks work?
A: Your streak counts consecutive days where you've completed all your enabled prayers. A day counts as complete when every enabled prayer schedule has a corresponding completion (through any method). The streak resets if a day passes without full completion. Your current streak and longest streak are tracked on the Home screen.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
- Prayer times seem incorrect: Check that your location is set correctly in Settings → Prayer Settings. Also verify you're using the right calculation method for your region.
- Apps aren't being blocked: Make sure you've granted Screen Time permission. Go to iOS Settings → Screen Time → SalahMode and ensure authorization is active. Also check that your schedules are enabled.
- Camera verification isn't detecting postures: Ensure your full body is visible from a side profile. Place your phone to the side at a distance where your entire body fits in the frame. Good lighting helps accuracy.
- Prayer mat not being recognized: Point your camera directly at the prayer mat with good lighting. Hold steady for a moment while the app processes the image.
- Mosque verification says no mosques found: Make sure location services are enabled. The app searches within 500 meters. If no mosques are found, you can fall back to camera-based verification.
- Notifications not arriving: Check that notifications are enabled in iOS Settings → SalahMode → Notifications.
- Emergency unlocks didn't reset: Emergency unlocks reset every Sunday. Check the Emergency Unlocks section in Settings to see your current count and reset date.
